As I've said over and over on this website, once you notice you have a yeast infection, the problem is honestly worse than you think. On the flip side, once your obvious symptoms go away, that doesn't mean you're actually cured.
The steps needed to prevent yeast infection, are actually also the same steps to completely cure it.
The misconceptions about symptoms vs. cause are the number one reason why at
least half of everyone who gets a yeast infection, gets another one soon afterward. In other words, you didn't really cure the yeast infection at all, you just got rid of the symptoms you couldn't ignore.
Here are a variety of tips that will help you both to get rid of your yeast infection, and to prevent a recurrence of your symptoms. Most of these tips are meant to help everybody prevent yeast infection, not just women!
- Keep your underarms, genitals, and all other areas where skin folds onto skin, dry and clean. Yeast flourishes in warm, moist areas such as these - so remove the moisture by habit.
- Don't wear tight-fitting clothes, and avoid synthetic undergarments. Both of these prevent your skin from "breathing," which means both heat and moisture get trapped, promoting yeast.
- Don't wear wet clothes any longer than you have to - this includes drying off and changing after swimming, as well as after being caught in the rain, working outdoors, walking through snow, etc.
- If your child is getting diaper rash, change and clean the diaper area more often, and be sure to use a barrier cream.
- Don't douche more often than necessary, and use a milder douche. Frequent douching, or using strong solutions, will upset your PH balance and promote yeast growth.
- Use plain white toilet paper, and avoid any perfumed or chemically-enhanced products meant for your genital regions, armpits, etc. These products upset the skin, making them weaker against infections.
- Eat sugar-free yogurt that contains live bacterial cultures. These good bacteria aid your digestion and also keep yeast growth in your stomach "in check."
- Eat less sugar in general. Sugar is food for yeast.
- Avoid using skin products, soaps and other bathroom products that might contain xenoestrogen. These animal extracts work in the body the same as your own estrogen, when it comes to yeast - they raise the sugar level of your blood, once again, feeding the yeast.
- Read about yeast infection symptoms and yeast infection causes - and then keep those articles in mind any time you have a strong craving for sugar or starch.
- Any time you need to take antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medicines, talk to your doctor about ways to prevent yeast infection during those treatments. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines increase your risk of Candidiasis and other fungal infections.
- If you've never had a yeast infection before, don't self-diagnose. All of the kinds of yeast infection share symptoms with other problems - treating the wrong problem can make it worse.
